"Why Extended Family Photos Matter: Capture the Moments Before They’re Gone"
This blog post is truly from my heart, because in my 30+ years as a San Antonio photographer, I’ve witnessed too many families miss the chance to document precious moments—and regret it later.
Growing up, my mother made us take a big, extended family portrait every other year. It was never easy. Coordinating schedules, figuring out clothing, dealing with toddlers and teenagers—it always felt like a challenge. But this was the only thing she ever asked for, and so we made it happen.
We did it multiple times over the years. And after my mother passed away in 2016, those family photos became one of the most meaningful treasures we had left of her. Sure, some relatives may have rolled their eyes, but now those portraits are prized possessions. They capture her legacy—four children and nine grandsons (yes, nine!)—all together in one beautiful image that will last forever.
We are incredibly grateful that she insisted we take those photos. And that’s why I want to share a few truths with you today:
1. The Timing Will Never Be Perfect
Life gets busy—there are always other priorities. But where there’s a will, there’s a way. If you keep waiting for the "perfect" moment, it may never come.
2. It’s an Investment in Your Legacy
Yes, family portraits are an investment, but what better way to honor your family's legacy? The memories captured in these sessions become irreplaceable over time.
3. None of Us Are Promised Tomorrow
If you keep saying, “We’ll do it next year,” just remember—next year, everyone will be a little older. And the matriarch or patriarch of your family may no longer be able to participate, or worse, may no longer be with you. Extended family photos ensure you capture these moments before they slip away.
